Tomb Sculpture

Pairs of stone statues of civil and military officials standing in font of a tomb are believed to guard the deceased and protect the tomb. A stone statue of a civil official wears a bokgeon("a kind of head-cover and of cloth") on its head and holds a baton with two hands, while a statue of military official shows a valiant spirit, being clad in armor and wearing a sword at its side. In spite of their stereo-typed forms of expression, it is pleasant to observed that each of the statues is different in facial expression, build, and attire.

A Jangmyeongdeung("stone lantern the guards a grave"), which is believed to scare evil spirits away, represents the social status of the tomb occupant, so it can be set up only in the boundaries of graves of kings and highest-boundaries of graves of kings and highest-ranking officials. It is also called 'sekdeungryong', or 'seokdeung'.

General View of Tomb Sculpture

The museum is full of attractive things. Visitors look into various flowers, trees and statues as well as traditional buildings, so that they sometimes become unaware of the passage of time. Stone statues of civil officials, gravestones, and jangmyeongdeungs are also intriguing things to take a look at. The place where the stone statues are displayed is dyed yellow by fallen leaves from persimmon and gingko trees in autumn. The statues together with Jindo dogs are considered guards to keep the jongga safe. The calm atmosphere hangs around the tomb of Yi Wonbo and that of Hamcheongun.
